Lake Maria State Park is one of the few remaining instances of the “Big Woods” which consists of maple, oak and basswood forests that once populated parts of southern Minnesota. The park provides visitors with opportunities to hike, backpack, horseback ride and cross-country ski. A boardwalk along the marsh lets visitors stroll through the marsh areas. There are backpack sites located on remote lakes and ponds throughout the park. Plenty of log camper cabins are also available furnished with bunk beds for six and table and benches. Lake Maria State Park is also home to the Blandings turtle, which is easily identified by its bright yellow spots and remains one of Minnesota’s threatened species.
